On February 1, 2017, the website “nih.govYour text to link…” presented a news release regarding the results of a five year study regarding stem cell transplants and the promise of a possible remission of multiple sclerosis.

MS (multiple sclerosis) is an autoimmune disease which attacks the central nervous system, causing individuals with the disease to have symptoms that may include, weakness, fatigue, pain, and speech and motor skill troubles.

The study was conducted on a small sampling of patients with the disease over a five year period. The treatment called HDIT/HCT, included the following procedure:

  • First, the patient’s blood-forming stem cells were drawn.
  • Second, high dose chemotherapy was administered to weaken the immune system.
  • Third, then the patient’s own stem cells were reintroduced into the body to rebuild t he immune system.

Patients did have the usual expected side effects, such as infections. Overall, patients remained in remission and showed improvement in their mobility and physical capabilities. Though three patients died during the study, it was determined that their deaths were not related to the treatment.

The trial was sponsored by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID).
